IIn August, a tragic incident unfolded when two people were found dead after a boat carrying migrants encountered severe difficulties while attempting to cross the Channel. The situation escalated on Tuesday, when a major rescue operation was launched following the capsizing of a boat off the French coast.
The boat, which was carrying over 50 migrants, capsized near Wimereux, a town close to Boulogne-sur-Mer. The French coast guard reported that at least 10 individuals were in critical condition after being rescued from the water. These individuals were said to be in a state of cardio-respiratory arrest, highlighting the severe nature of the emergency.
Efforts to save the migrants involved a coordinated air and sea operation, mobilizing both French and international resources to address the crisis. The operation faced challenging conditions, including rough seas and limited visibility, which complicated the rescue efforts.
Local officials, including the mayor of Wimereux, have expressed grave concern over the situation. France 3 reported that the critically ill migrants were in dire need of urgent medical attention. Local newspaper La Voix du Nord suggested that the death toll might have risen to at least 10, but this information has not yet been officially confirmed.
